***Emergency!***

Donations needed for the care of Eryka and El Dorado! Twin Oaks Horse Sanctuary HAD to rescue these two horses due to the extremely poor condition they were in. Both horses have been together for many years so separating them was not an option. They are both around 21 years old and have moved to at least four barns this year alone. They were starved by the owners of the barns when their former owner could not afford their board, which is disgusting. To get them back in good condition, donations are needed for the dental care, veterinarian care, worming, farrier, and of course, feed and hay. We will be posting a video diary of Eryka and El Dorado weekly to show their progress as we get them to a healthy weight.

Twin Oaks presents  Country Night!

Twin Oaks Happy Horses!

What We Do!

Everyone knows that we live in a throw-away society these days. We all want the newest phone, computer, car, etc., but it is a shame that we feel that way about a living thing, like a horse. We show them, race them, use them for lessons, breed them and as soon as the swayback starts to show, the arthritis kicks in, they become harder to feed, it is time to get rid of them. They are not flashy enough. They don’t want to spend the money on them; it isn’t worth it. It is time to move on to a newer model.

“A good man will take care of his horses and dogs not only when they are young, but when they are old and past service” – Plutarch

At Twin Oaks Horse Sanctuary , we love the old models. We love the “outdated” models. We appreciate that the horse worked hard their whole life or they were so abused, they lost their spirit. We love the broodmare who can’t be bred anymore. We love the horse who has a scar on the side of their mouth from abusive training habits. We love sway-backs, flat teeth. We go against what society says and give these animals a loving home. We are the barn of misfits, but loved horses.

Our horses range in age from 13 to over 40. Most of our horses are well into their twenties and have come to us because they were unwanted. They all have a story. We have some that were days away from being put down because their owner could not keep them. We have the broodmares who can’t have foals, the broken down race horses, and the arthritic show horse.   We have the elderly horses who gave their all and now need to live out their lives being loved and cared for without the fear of abuse or neglect.

Our sanctuary is a safe haven for these beautiful senior or unwanted horses. We make sure they have horse friends as well as human friends. Most horses relax when they are with other horses especially senior horses and abused horses. We provide a quiet environment for them. We call it “The Twin Oaks Treatment”. We turn them out in a nice quiet area nestled in the woods with their friends. On any given warm afternoon, you will find them sleeping peacefully in the sun. That neglected horse gets their spirit back, that senior horse gets that second chance at the good life. There is nothing like the feeling of seeing that dull, sullen horse get that sparkle back in their eye. That’s what we give these wonderful animals; we give them their life back.

We are a forever home for these beautiful horses. Once they are with us, they are cared for and loved for the rest of their natural lives. As everyone knows, this is a great financial commitment, so donations for their care and well-being are greatly needed and appreciated!!!!
